The control consists of three parts:

Data Focus - defines the source of filter options; the Current Project or Linked Projects.  

Feature Map - if the associated table is relatable to spatial data, the feature map control is shown. This can be used as a tool to visually select data, or used as an indication of what data is selected in the grid:

Grid - select filter data by clicking one or more check boxes.
